Is Your Business Invisible on Google and ChatGPT?
Customers now ask Google and AI assistants for one answer, not ten links. Here is how to check if your business is in that answer, and seven fixes to start this month.
If a customer asks Google or ChatGPT for “the best option near me” and your business is not in the answer, you have lost that customer before they ever saw your website.
Search has quietly changed. People no longer scroll through ten blue links. They ask a question, read one short answer, and act on it. That answer names a handful of businesses. Everyone else is invisible.
The good news: the businesses that get named are not always the biggest. They are the ones that make it easy for Google and AI assistants to understand who they are, what they do and why they can be trusted. Any small business in India can do this, and most of the work costs little more than time.
How search has changed
Your customers now find businesses in four main ways, and each one picks winners differently.
- AI answers on Google. Many searches now open with an AI-written summary at the top of the page. It answers the question directly and often mentions a few businesses by name.
- AI assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini and similar tools are used like a knowledgeable friend: “Which clinic is good for kids?” or “Suggest a resort for a family weekend.” They recommend, they don’t list.
- Voice search. On phones and smart speakers, people speak their question and hear one answer, not ten.
- Maps. For anything local, the Google Maps results with stars, photos and a call button decide who gets the phone call.
In every case the customer sees fewer choices than before. Being on page one is no longer enough. You need to be in the answer.
What Google and AI look at before naming you
AI tools do not guess. They recommend businesses they can find clear, consistent and trustworthy information about. These are the signals that matter most:
| Signal | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Clear answers on your website | Your pages say plainly what you do, where, for whom and at what price range. |
| A complete Google Business Profile | Correct category, hours, photos, services and a working phone number. |
| Consistent details everywhere | Same name, address and phone on your site, Google, Facebook and online directories. |
| Reviews and replies | Recent, genuine reviews, and you replying to them, good or bad. |
| Proof of expertise | Real photos, team details, experience, certifications and helpful articles. |
| A fast, mobile-friendly site | Pages that load quickly on a phone and are easy to read. |
| Structured data | Hidden code (schema) that tells search engines your business type, location, hours and services. |
In SEO terms this is called AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation). In plain words: make your business easy to understand and easy to trust.
Are you invisible? A two-minute self-check
Open your phone and try these. Each “no” is a gap a competitor can use.
- Search “[your service] near me”. Does your business appear in the map results?
- Ask ChatGPT or Gemini “Suggest a good [your service] in [your city]”. Are you named?
- Search your business name. Is your Google profile complete, with photos and correct hours?
- Have you received and replied to a review in the last month?
- Does your website load in under three seconds on mobile data?
- Does your homepage say, in one sentence, what you do and where?
- Is your phone number the same on your website, Google and Facebook?
- Can a customer reach you on WhatsApp in one tap?
If you answered “yes” to fewer than six, customers are probably finding someone else first.
Seven fixes you can start this month
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Pick the most accurate category, add every service, upload fresh photos of your place and work, and post an update every week.
- Answer real questions on your website. Add a short FAQ with the questions customers actually ask on the phone: price range, timings, location, how to book. AI tools love clear question-and-answer text.
- Make one sentence do the heavy lifting. At the top of your homepage, say what you do, for whom and where. “Family dental clinic for kids and adults, open seven days” beats “Welcome to our website”.
- Fix your details everywhere. Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your site, Google, Facebook, Instagram and directories. Mixed details confuse search engines.
- Ask for reviews, and reply to all of them. Send happy customers a direct review link on WhatsApp. Thank people for good reviews and answer complaints calmly.
- Show you are the expert. Add real photos, your team, years of experience and certifications. Write simple guides that answer customer questions. This builds the trust signals Google calls E-E-A-T.
- Speed up and add schema. Compress images, remove heavy plugins and make sure the site works well on a phone. Ask your developer to add LocalBusiness schema so search engines read your details correctly.
Be the business AI recommends
Search will keep moving toward direct answers. The businesses that prepare now will be the ones customers hear about first, and the gap will be hard for late movers to close.
You don’t have to do it all at once. Start with your Google profile and your homepage sentence this week, then work down the list.
